Andrew Ilnicki is Director of Digital Innovation for VCU School of the Arts, and has an MFA in Visual Communication from VCU in the Department of Graphic Design. Ilnicki works across departments to foster effective practices and new uses for academic technology and facilitate changes in education for students and faculty about issues related to the future of art and design education, technology, and interdisciplinarity. Ilnicki has taught graduate and undergraduate courses for the daVinci Center for Product Innovation, and the Departments of Graphic Design and Kinetic Imaging. With the VCUarts Creative Entrepreneurship office, Ilnicki coordinates a new interdisciplinary internship program called CoLab (short for Collaboratory) that focuses on the intersections between Art, Healthcare, and Technology.
Anton Kossack is the Head of Data Science and a member of the Leadership Team at Compare.com. He is primarily responsible for identifying business problems that can benefit from better use of data. Anton ensures that data is collected, consumed and acted upon in the 2017 Mentors best possible manner. Before joining Compare.com, Anton started the Business Analytics function at one of the largest insurers in the UK and grew the function into a group-wide consultancy responsible for substantial savings and incremental revenue. Anton received a BSc in Physics with Particle Physics and Cosmology (with honors), and an MSc in Management (Finance) from Swansea University in the UK.
Arnold Kim started MacRumors in 2000 at his final year of med school. He gave up his medical profession in July 2008, to work on MacRumors full-time.
Art Espey is the Chief Operating Office at TMI. Art’s role as Chief Operating Officer (aka Business Ninja) is to ensure that the strategy, people and processes are aligned with bringing the best value to our clients. This bounces between strategic and operational excellence. He served as a navigator on cargo ships and his time as United States Marine Corps Officer honed his leadership skills. He learned operations as a manufacturing plant manager. He was a division general manager in an Inc. 500 company and a C level officer of a company in the top 100 in its industry - that is where Art learned how to ensure that his clients receive exceptional value.
Carrie Roth is President + CEO of Activation Capital and the Virginia Bio+Tech Park, bringing 25 years of broad experience as an entrepreneur, and in political and non-profit leadership to the position. Carrie previously served as Virginia Deputy Secretary of Commerce & Trade, where she led the successful effort before the General Assembly to provide over $113 million in new economic development funding – including over $57 million to support Virginia’s innovation economy. Prior to joining the McDonnell Administration, she was President of her company Capitol Square Communications. Carrie served as Press Secretary for U.S. Senator George Allen, whom she worked for in various roles from 1993 to 2003, and as Policy Director for the gubernatorial campaign of Attorney General Jerry Kilgore.
Catherine Corso is a high energy marketing professional with 8+ years of CPG experience and an eternal passion for new products, brand creation, and brand strategy.
Chiedo is a husband, father, startup tech mentor, and believer that we all need to do our part empowering the children in our communities. David Vislosky has over 25 years of experience committed to entrepreneurial endeavors with emerging technology companies through multiple leading roles including digital marketing strategy, business development, client & relationship management and project management. Extensive experience managing customers, vendors, and internal implementation teams to support custom integrations and client success in the digital marketing, financial technologies and enterprise software industries. Engineering graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology going straight into management consulting before founding my own wireless logistics start-up working with emerging wireless data collection and RFID technologies. Moved into fin tech as V.P. of Relationship Management and Project Management for Vestmark, a leading wealth management trading platform, and then moved into Digital Marketing working in analytics marketing, lead generation, and marketing agencies. Currently, a Digital Marketing consultant for eCommerce and B2B companies with expertise in Facebook and Amazon advertising, and overall digital marketing & branding strategy.
David Wright has 30 years experience in technology and business management. He's held positions from Software Developer to Chief Information Officer and Chief Operations Officer at firms such as the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Capital One, LPL Financial, and Capital One Bank Europe. In addition, David was a field artillery officer in the Virginia Army National Guard for 15 years, and has served on many community boards. His education includes undergraduate and masters degrees from VCU, a masters degree from UVA, and a bank management certification from UVA and the Virginia Bankers Association.
Dinesh Pai is a seasoned healthcare executive with over 29 years experience. His expertise has centered around healthcare finance, revenue cycle and operations with specific focus on physician practices. For the last 18 years, he worked in two large healthcare systems, Novant Health and Bon Secours Health System. This has allowed him to further learn and experience operations of large, integrated health delivery organizations.
Doug Carleton has been a SCORE mentor for over six years specializing in financing of all types for small business working with both startups and existing businesses on overall growth strategies, in particular financing strategies, both debt and equity. In 2015 he created for SCORE the first business model canvas competition held in Richmond, now having completed its third year. He has over 25 years of experience in small business finance including twelve years in SBA lending. In addition to his work as a SCORE mentor, he is Chairman of the Board of BizWorks, a small business incubator in Chesterfield County, a Lighthouse Labs advisor, a member of the Community Engagement Committee of Activation Capital and a mentor for Startup Virginia. He has been a frequent speaker and author on SBA and small business financing, and created a program on how to finance a startup or existing business which he regularly presents for SCORE.
Elizabeth P. Pyle serves as Associate Director for Technology Entrepreneurship and Director, University of Virginia’s NSF I-Corps Program in the School of Engineering & Applied Sciences (SEAS). Her focus is developing and expanding the SEAS Technology Entrepreneurship Program beyond the classroom and across the school. Her responsibilities include, but not limited to developing student facing entrepreneurship programing, mentoring students as they shape their ideas into products and businesses; coordinate internal and external information and resources to facilitate the growth of a sustainable entrepreneurship ecosystem while maintaining communication and support for key stakeholders in the SEAS community. Ms. Pyle is also the founder and President of Pyle & Associates, LLC, an Interim Executive Management firm providing customized management and business consulting services across diversified industries. Her extensive experience in business development, strategic planning, marketing, operations, and leadership have left a lasting impact on overall business performance from start-up to turn-around situations. Ms. Pyle is recognized for her unusual ability to quickly create clarity around key issues to ensure that strategic plans are developed, executed and monitored for success.
Dr. Garret Westlake is an entrepreneur and educator committed to real world learning outcomes and access and inclusion in innovation and entrepreneurship. As the founder and CEO of STEM Force Technology, Dr. Westlake led and exited a social venture that created employment opportunities for individuals on the autism spectrum in STEM careers. As the executive director of the da Vinci Center for Innovation at Virginia Commonwealth University, he is leading the transformation of VCU into one of the nation’s leading universities for cross-disciplinary collaboration, real world entrepreneurial experiences, and economic development through the activation of public research universities as innovation hubs. Prior to joining VCU, Dr. Westlake served as an associate dean for Arizona State University’s #1 ranked Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and faculty associate in the College of Technology and Innovation. He has worked closely with Ashoka U, the Clinton Global Initiative University, and the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Students and startups he has mentored have been named to Forbes 30 Under 30 for Healthcare Innovation, accepted to Techstars, Y Combinator, SXSW, and awarded Rhodes Scholarships and named Resolution Project Fellows.
Hunter Post has coached leaders from Google, Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, and many tech startups. Hunter mentors leaders at Darden Business School's Innovation Lab and guest lectures at the Federal Executive Institute for young executives from NASA and the intelligence community, where he has prior experience. Hunter has served as Chief Operating Officer of a cybersecurity startup and has education in engineering, strategy, and innovation.
Ian MacRae founded E-N Computers in 1997 when he was 18 years old. His vision came out of a passion for helping people with technology. Our Remote Service Desk started originally as Ian’s cell phone, and today has grown to feature a team of 22 experts dedicated to helping clients remotely, internally and onsite throughout Virginia and Washington DC. Aside from E-N Computers, Ian serves on the board of directors for The Ross Performing Arts Center, is a Rotarian, and recently was Awarded the Generation Y leadership award by the Chamber of Commerce.
Jay Markiewicz has had a professionally spanning cross functional career paths with the common theme of navigating the complexity and ambiguity to figure out how to perform at a high level. I love discovering the hidden, often elusive, underlying principles on how stuff works in order to translate it to simplified methods, frameworks, and models. I share what I have discovered as a coach and mentor, in articles, created content for workshops/classrooms, and with anyone that has ever asked the question "how do I perform better?" Jeff Palumbo is an active entrepreneur with a highly creative and assertive “lead by example” management style, combined with a heart for helping people through business and charitable initiatives. Jen Finn is a strategic advisor, angel investor, entrepreneur advocate and "recovering corporate executive.” She has spent her career building products and services for small businesses, rapidly scaling complex operations for highly regulated industries, and developing/growing epically high performing teams. She’s been hands on in almost every aspect of how businesses operate… software developer, product manager, risk management, data analyst, team leadership… all adding up to her most recent role as COO of Capital One’s Small Business Bank. Her passion for supporting small businesses carries through into her angel investing, which she began in 2008, giving her unique perspective in bridging startup and big corporate worlds.
Jill Lemon is a practiced talent acquisition expert, workforce advisor, and captivating storyteller. Over the last decade, Jill has worked with nonprofits and businesses across Virginia to develop and implement customized workforce solutions and effective communication strategies that align with her clients’ brands and business models. Before co-founding Sandbox, Jill served as the talent acquisition manager for MBL Technologies, an Arlington, VA-based cybersecurity consulting firm. As the company’s talent management lead, Jill built a program focused on creatively recruiting and retaining top-quality talent in highly competitive markets. From 2009 - 2015, Jill was a Partner at Momentum Resources, where she provided job search and coaching services to working mothers in need of alternative work schedules and/or reemerging into the workforce. In her early career, she worked for several large Fortune companies including Randstad and Capital One. Jill is also Founder of Curious Lemon, LLC, a small practice dedicated to career counseling, leadership coaching and professional mentorship across the region.
Jim Edge is the founder and president of Cornerstone Financial Management, Inc. and has been actively involved in financial and investment activities for over twenty-five years. He has extensive experience in managing companies on an interim basis and has been involved in the acquisition and disposition of several companies. Through Cornerstone Mr. Edge performs valuations for company split-ups, mergers, estate and gift tax purposes, partner admissions, and family planning purposes. He has qualified as an expert witness in Virginia. Mr. Edge’s professional background encompasses careers in the banking, real estate, and accounting fields. He earned a Bachelors of Science degree from Hampden-Sydney College and a Master in Business Administration from Rutgers University. He also holds a Virginia real estate broker’s license and earned the CCIM designation (Certified Commercial-Investment Member) awarded by the National Association of Realtors.

Joe Kunkel has spent over 25 years consulting and leading strategy and marketing teams for a number of different companies. Early in his career Joe worked for General Motors, General Electric and McKinsey and Company before starting a company that made healthy foods for kids. More recently Joe served as the Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Marketing Officer for CarMax (which is headquartered in Richmond, VA) from 1998 through December 2012. During Joe's tenure at CarMax the company's sales rose from less than $1 Billion to more than $10 Billion, the company's stock increased in value over 10 fold, and the company was named by Fortune magazine as one of the 100 best companies to work for 9 years in a row. Joe was one of the top 5 officers of the company during that time period. Joe is currently an Executive Advisor with New Richmond Ventures, a mentor with SCORE, and an independent consultant working with nonprofits and startup companies.
Joe Whitchurch is currently head of Customer Experience and Innovation for Capital One Small Business, leading a team creating best-in-class tools, technology and servicing experiences to help small businesses succeed. Joe has held a variety of customer and innovation roles in his 11 years at Capital One, from product and technology developments which have received multiple industry awards and patents, to designing the conversion experience for tens of millions of customers with the HSBC credit portfolio acquisition, to developing and launching the company’s first home-grown Big Data product. Additionally, Joe has always had a passion for helping entrepreneurs, serving as a mentor with the Harvard iLabs program and advising several start-ups, most recently Toopher, a data security and authentication firm recently acquired by Salesforce.com. Prior to Capital One Joe was a consultant with Simon-Kutcher GmBH in Germany and the UK, specializing in strategy and product development.

Jon Brew has had over 30 years experience with corporations including Georgia Pacific Consumer Products, Nestle Purina, and McKesson Medical Surgical. Jon began my career in advertising, working on the Procter and Gamble account. His experience includes branding and consumer products, business to business and medical products, combined with continuous improvement ""lean"" skills. He’s focused on new business and new product development, and created and developed “new to the world” products in both pet diagnostics and recreational water testing, using IDEO’s design process ( “design thinking” is the model for VCU’s da Vinci Center).

She has an M.A. in Design Management from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Kimmie uses Design Thinking as a framework to facilitate Innovation Management and Brand Strategy, taking a human-centered approach to communication and value creation. As the Creative Director at Love Affair, a creative content house based in Richmond, Kimmie facilitates creative strategy and brand architecture for a range of regional and national clients. As a start-up advisor, Kimmie works with founders to identify their key values and differentiating factors, resolving their user experience design by enabling clarity and reducing complexity.

Kyle McQuighan is a CPA and supports Aronson's Technology Industry Services practice. Kyle began his career with a “Big 4” firm, and worked in both the assurance practice and risk assurance practices. Most recently, Kyle led the mid-Atlantic practice of Buxbaum HCS, a consulting firm, specializing in M&A situations for middle market companies and outsourced accounting for technology companies.

Maria Pahuja is an operations executive with an acute passion for the nitty gritty details that improve how companies operate. Prior to founding Vayas, Maria worked in the operational trenches of several tech companies and startups including 5min Media and Onswipe - two startups backed by Spark Capital – the same team that invested in Twitter, Tumblr, Wayfair and Oculus. In both roles, she led the structuring of systems and processes that scaled the businesses exponentially, leading to their profitable exits. Most recently, she headed operations at Vimeo where she focused on setting up a supply chain system for the entertainment unit. Matt Teachey - With degrees in mechanical engineering and product innovation, I have been working in product development since 2012. I have designed and engineered products for everyone from inventors and startups to Fortune 500 companies, and I enjoy working on the full product life-cycle from idea to prototyping to manufacturing.

He has international exposure to multiple verticals identifying value for software companies in the Product Life-cycle Management (PLM) and Internet of Things (IoT) fields.

Rob Roy is chief digital officer for sprint.com, boostmobile.com and telesales. He is charged with driving digital transformation across multiple functions, with an emphasis on sales, marketing, technology and analytics. Rob’s mission is to deliver the largest scale digital transformation of any Fortune 100 company to date, and help Sprint become a data-obsessed, customer- and digital-first mobile company. He is developing, leading, and implementing digital strategies for a broad group of initiatives. These include customer acquisition, care and retention, and other marketing and sales channels to drive the company’s development of a one-to-moment relationship with its customers. The role is focused on continuing Sprint’s digital evolution, developing and driving strategies that fuel growth, achieve strategic and operational goals, and address significant opportunities for exceptional customer experience.
Sidarta Tanu is the Chief Risk Officer of EnrichHER, a debt crowdfunding platform for women-led businesses. He has over 20 years of recruiting experience for a wide variety of organizations ranging from private businesses to publicly traded technology and Fortune 500 companies. He has a diverse assignment history in next-generation energy, advanced sciences, and advanced IT-related ventures. Tom Balaban after 28 years as an investment banker and twelve years, as EVP/COO/CFO of an Internet Content Provider and Software Developer, Tom now works as a consultant specializing in finance, accounting, IT and program management. As an investment banker, Tom showed his ability to organize complex projects while developing the invaluable skill for “herding cats”; getting a disparate set of resources to move in the same direction for the good of the project. He has deployed those skills, together with those developed while serving as an EVP/COO/CFO, to helping other organizations set up appropriate accounting systems, prepare requests for financing, assess proper personnel requirements, set up internal and external communications/computer networks, and by assisting management with establishing time lines, work flow and budgets for company projects.
Zane Gibbs is an experienced Product Design Leader and Marketer with a demonstrated history of working in the consumer goods industry. Had a 23 year corporate career in a variety of roles including Market Planning, Innovation Management, Market Analysis, Consumer Futures, Packaging Innovation, and Design Thinking. Recently co-founded a Richmond basted innovation strategy firm (ZADA Strategy) with a former colleague at Altria. Graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with Ph.D. focused in Chemical Physics.
